The Penn State Scandal: A Personal Message from Jon Ostroff

I went to law school for one reason: to be able to represent those who are injured. In my experience, there are few situations that can cause more mental, emotional and physical harm than a child suffers, after they are victimized by sexual abuse.

According to the National Center for Victims of Crime, approximately 1 out 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys will be victims of sexual assault before they turn 18 years old. This number is thought to be under-reported, since most children victimized by sexual assault won’t report the crime; as a result, the adult predators that commit sexual assault on children keep getting away with it.

When a child is sexually assaulted by a clergyman, teacher, physician or other adult responsible for their welfare, the betrayal, fear and trauma will stay with that child forever. That is why I believe that protecting our children is the single most important responsibility for adults in our society.

I have devoted most of my adult life to children. I am an involved, proud father to my three children. I am an Honorary Member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), contributing to their efforts, which benefit children, for over twenty years. My wife Amy and I reach out to children across the world through our charity “Love to Langa” which will be building an orphanage for HIV orphans in Capetown, South Africa, in order to provide these children with a safe home, food, clothes and an education.

As a Penn State alumnus, I was horrified to learn about the acts of Coach Jerry Sandusky and the failure to act by those at Penn State who should have taken steps to stop his repeated acts of sex abuse on the children in his care. My prayers go to the victims and their family. I pray that each of these children can recover from this horrific abuse and find a sexual abuse lawyer who will fight to give them a voice and a chance.

The only way we can stop the scourge of sexual abuse is to demand accountability from sexual predators, regardless of rank, to encourage victims to speak up against their assailants. To that end, I have joined forces with legendary Pennsylvania sexual assault attorneys Slade McLaughlin and Paul Lauricella, who are well known for representing children victimized by high-ranking predators, including victims of Sandusky at Penn State and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

As an attorney, I believe it is the greatest honor to win justice for those who have suffered needlessly. I consider it a privilege to accept the responsibility of showing children victimized by sex abuse that they can trust again.

If you or someone you love has been the victim of sexual assault in Pennsylvania, I would like to help you. Please call me anytime for a free consultation.
